In the formative years of aviation, each airplane builder believed they possessed the key to opening the world of flight to more people - an airplane that could fly higher, farther, faster. This nostalgic look at open-cockpit and cabin-class aircraft of the '20s, '30s and '40s examines the growing role of airplanes in society. Models from manufacturers such as Curtiss, Beech, Stearman, Taylor-Piper, and Lockheed are depicted primarily through modern colour photography of restored aircraft. Though WWII brought the elimination many of the companies represented, others survived by adapting to wartime production.
