The Morris Minor was an iconic design of the 1940s and 1950s that made it's industry debut at the Earls Court Motor Show. Somewhat controversially it was designed by Alec Issigonis, but the huge success of the model quickly brought it popular acclaim.
In those days before the widespread use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) the early prototypes of the external shape produced at the Morris Motors Limited plant at Cowley in Oxfordshire were made of clay, and later ones of wood. The design team knew the vehicle as the Mosquito, but that was soon changed to the Morris Minor. Production of actual cars commenced in 1948 and this book was published to celebrate the 60th anniversary of that event.
The author Ray Newell takes a detail look at the initial design sketches and development of the range of models produced during the twenty-two years of production. Details of prototype cars, marketing materials and archive photographs help to illustrate the story of the various models. Factory production techniques and road test reviews are also covered.
The models covered in this book include:
- Morris Minor pre-production prototypes 1943-1948
- Morris Oxford Series MO and Morris Six.
- Morris Minor Series MM. Saloon 1948-1953 and Tourer 1948-1951
- Convertible 1951-53
- Morris Minor Four door Saloon Series MM 1950-1953
- Morris Minor Series ll Saloon and Convertible 1952 - 1956
- Morris Minor Series ll Van, Pick-up and Traveller 1953-1956
- Morris Minor 1000. All Models 1956- 1962, including Series lll Vans and Pick-ups
- Morris Minor 1,000,000 (limited Edition Models) 1961
- Morris Minor 1000. 1098cc All Models including Austin and Morris 6cwt Vans and Pick-ups
Historically the Morris Minor was important because it brought personal transport to a post-war world which had suffered a degree of austerity for almost two decades. It was very important to Britain because export sales railed much-needed foreign exchange. Alec Issigonis went on to design another iconic design - the mini.
