| Pieter Boogaart is a Dutchman, a former English teacher who developed an all-consuming passion for the A272 during several motoring and cycling holidays. In his view 'It represents England, its England in short. It captures the Englishness of English life'.
This successful book was the inspiration for a Carlton TV documentary about both the A272 road and the author, Pieter Boogaart. The A272 is a busy road running from Winchester in Hampshire to Poundford in East Sussex. On the way it passes through Petersfield, Petworth and Billingshurst. We are informed that the A272 is crossed by the tracks of five current railways and four dismantled ones. Six rivers flow under it and eight power lines go over it. The road has 13 sets of traffic lights and 31 roundabouts. Along the road, there are 34 phone boxes, 47 pillar boxes, 16 hotels, 21 churches and 32 pubs.
