Sub-titled 'The Streamline Era on the LMS'.

'The Coronation Scot' provided a high-speed luxury service between London (Euston) and Glasgow (Central). It went into operation in 1937 and was the LMS reply to the high-speed trains put on by the LNER in 1935. The train was a major feature in LMS publicity, a source of great pride to its staff and an indication of future trends in passenger services.

These locomotives were designed under the leadership of William Stanier and were a development of his earlier Princess Royal class. As Stanier was in India for most of the period much of the design work was done by Stanier's team of Coleman, Riddles and Bond. At the time these locomotives were the most powerful to be built in Britain.

This book recounts the story of the train, of the engines and of the carriages they hauled, of the tour of America and of the whole LMS venture into streamlining. With a variety of contemporary material, and lavish coverage in photographs and drawings, it recreates something of the spirit, atmosphere and promise of the brief but exciting era of streamlining on the LMS.

The book's contents are as follows;

Chapter 2 - High Speed and Regular Service
