Sir Nigel Gresley designed the V2 class 2-6-2s as mixed traffic locomotives, capable of hauling the lighter express trains. Introduced in 1936 they had a degree of elegance which epitomised the products of Doncaster works.
Very soon after the V2s were introduced the nation was plunged into the Second World War and they found themselves in plain black livery hauling freight trains for the war effort. Few people photographed them during the war, because to do so would have risked being jailed as a spy. However, the restrictions were lifted post-war, as this book shows. The last of the class was withdrawn in the 1960s and just one V2, named 'Green Arrow', was preserved and can still be seen today.
