D1, D2, D3 and D4 and The M&GN 4-4-0s are featured in this, the 19th volume of Yeadon's Register.
Four of the classes originated on the Great Northern Railway and became LNER classes D1 to D4, the latter class was somewhat shortlived as the six members were all rebuilt to D3 standard within 6 years of the formation of the LNER.
Many of the other 4-4-0s enjoyed a somewhat elongated existence and survived to become British Railways property, albeit only for a short period of time.
The other four classes covered by this book had a much different origin, owing more to the traditions of the Midland Railway at Derby than to the Great Northern Railway at Doncaster. These were the Midland & Great Northern Railway 4-4-0s, described in LNER official documents as 'crocks' because they were old and non-standard. They began as two classes, but rebuilding of both types resulted in four classes. Surprisingly, some examples were still in existence in 1939 when war brought about ennough traffic to keep all available locomotives in service. However, they had all gone by 1948 when the railways were Nationalised.
