Three of the classes originated on the Great Northern Railway, becoming LNER classes Q1 to Q3. The largest class featured in this volume originated from the Great Central Railway and became LNER class Q4. The Q1 tank engine was a wartime design of heavy shunting locomotive, essentially a Q4 with side tanks and a coal bunker.
