Wimbledon is regarded as the second most important railway junction in south-west London, Clapham Junction being the first, and has had a long and fascinating evolution.

The original line through Wimbledon was built by the London & Southampton Railway (L&SR), which became the London & South Western Railway (L&SWR). After the grouping it became part of the Southern Railway (SR).

Radiating from Wimbledon and included herein is the SR-built line to Sutton, the hybrid tracks to East Putney (which are shared by underground and surface trains) and the two routes to Tooting.
