For over 20 years, the railway bypassed Bournemouth, but when it did arrive it was the most important event in the town's history.
Dorchester (SR) had a terminal station which London-bound trains had to go past and then reverse back into. This archaic feature lasted into the era of dieselisation of the line.
The changes in operating methods, in rolling stock and in station architecture are all fully illustrated and numerous maps help to explain the interesting evolution of the route.
