The short lived Riddles-designed standard class 5 mixed traffic locomotives began emerging from Derby works in 1951. More than 250 standard 4-6-0s were built before production ceased in May 1957. They were solid and reliable workhorses, hauling passenger, parcels and freight trains on all regions of BR.
Some of the SR allocated members of the class carried names and lasted until the end of steam on the routes out of Waterloo to Exeter and Weymouth. Unnamed examples soldiered on elsewhere for a further year or so.
This book shows this versatile class hard at work throughout the BR network.
