Sub-titled: The Wantage Tramway

The Wantage Tramway was in reality only a railway from the waist down. It evolved that way, although the directors planned freight carriage from the outset, but tramway status brought many economies.

The resulting curious hybrid was photographed by relatively few people, but some fresh pictures have been discovered to add to the classic views of this unique operation, which made a consistent profit even in its final year.

Starting in the yard of Wantage Road station on the Great Western Railway(GWR), the line ran along the road to Wantage before crossing it and terminating in the town.

Perhaps the line's most famous locomotive was an 0-4-0WT which at one time had run on the Alford & Sutton Tramway and on the London & North Western Railway (L&NWR). This locomotive survives today at the preservation site next to Didcot railway station and is named 'Shannon'.
