This fondly remembered line, making its way through picturesque Berkshire and Hampshire scenery, became vitally important during the Second World War as a route for freight traffic.
Much of the route is still traceable today. It ran south fron Didcot with stations at Upton & Blewbury, Churn, Compton, Hampstead Norris, Hermitage, Newbury, Woodhay, Highclere, Burghclere, Litchfield, Whitchurch, Sutton Sconey, Kings Worthy and Winchester. Southampton was reached via LSWR tracks from the south of Winchester.
