The period was one of transition, with unfitted vehicles being withdrawn and then vacuum-braked goods wagons being replaced by modern air-braked examples.
The book looks in detail at the many and varied wagon types. Many of the high capacity air-braked private owner wagons were specially built for use in the modern British Rail era.
