The first covers the development of the Midland carriage up to 1901, under the aegis of Kirtley and Clayton, and the epoch-making decisions of the company to offer third-class accommodation on al trains, to abolish second-class and to upholster third-class carriages.
This second volume describes that development during the regimes of Bain and Reid up to the end of 1922. The authors have produced what can only be described as a work of great distinction which is sure to be regarded as the definitive account of Midland Railway carriages.
