Following his extensive travels in Spain in search of steam locomotives, author Lawrence Marshall turned his attention to India, making his first visit in 1970 and becoming captivated by the sub continent and her railways. He visited the Indian sub continent on no less than 25 occasions and photographed steam traction in almost every state in India. The illustrations in the book, both black and white and colour, show an incredible range of designs, many from British builders.
The book covers Indian Railways' narrow gauge lines, private narrow gauge railways, industrial railways and sugar factory railways. Many of the pictures were taken during the eight group visits which he arranged for the benefit of fellow enthusiasts, the 'special arrangements' resulted in seeing some remarkable locomotives. Indian Railways were extremely helpful with his sometimes outrageous requests. This book forms a fitting tribute to the narrow gauge steam scene in India, many of the lines illustrated are now in the annals of history and steam is finished with the exception of the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway.
The book is an illustrated coverage of his travels and the adventures these sometimes caused. Also included are full details of the narrow gauge steam locomotives of the nine zonal railways forming Indian Railways and maps showing the locations of lines and factories covered.
