Until recent times signalboxes were to be seen everywhere. They contained levers which were used to change signal indications to control train movements. They contained other levers for moving points, locking points so that they could not move under a train, and for placing detonators on the track when other warnings to train crews had failed. Those next to level crossings contained a 'ships wheel' which the signalman turned in order to operate the crossing gates.

The various railways and signalling contractors had their own unique designs of signalboxes. This book illustrates a large number of the designs which have ever existed, and charts the development of the British signal box.

An ideal reference book for the modeller and those researching railway signalling and architecture.
