Now more than 150 years old, the route has carried a wide range of traffic types including long distant expresses, local residential services and freight of all types.
All these are extensively illustrated, along with the varied architectural styles employed at the stations, many of which vanished long ago.
Until nationalisation the route was a main line of the famous and well-loved Great Western Railway (GWR) empire. It was the home of Kings, Castles, Halls and many other types of GWR steam locomotives.
