David Clough is a well-respected British railway author. In this book he details the operational history of the class 50s, formerly known as English Electric D400s.
The class grew out of an initiative to create something like a Deltic locomotive, but with a traditional "V" engine block, rather than a delta cylinder formation. An experimental locomotive numbered DP2 was built utilising a spare Deltic body. The experiment ended when the locomotive was involved in a crash at Thirsk. However, the prototype led to what was to become the class 50.
Initially allocated to the Crewe Division (D05) of the London Midland Region (LMR), these locos were a familiar sight hauling express trains on the West Coast Main Line (WCML) prior to becoming surplus when electrification reached Glasgow.
The whole of the class transferred to the Western Region (WR). They also regularly worked off of the WR to Birmingham and to London Waterloo.
In this well illustrated book the author's own photographs are supplemented by those of others and archive images.
