Class J16, J17, J18, J19, & J20. Compiled by W B Yeadon.
The LNER class J16 0-6-0 tender locomotives was originally GER (Great Eastern Railway) class F48, designed by James Holden. A Belpaire firebox version of the same type of locomotive was produced as GER class G58, becoming LNER class J17.
Then an improved version of the class G58 was introduced. These had a Schmidt superheater. They became GER class E72 and LNER class J18. But things did not stop there as the design was improved mechanically and a Robinson superheater was adopted. The result was the GER class T77, LNER class J19.
The ultimate GER 0-6-0 tender locomotives was the class D81, built at Stratford between 1920 and 1922. These became LNER class J20 and lasted well into the BR steam era.
