North Eastern 0-6-0 Tanks Class J73,J74,J75,J76,J77,J78,J79,J80 & The NER "44". Compiled by W B Yeadon.
This book continues Yeadon's review of NER 0-6-0Ts from volume 43B. It includes the HBR (Hull & Barnsley Railway) 0-6-0Ts which became NER property.
LNER class J73 were more powerful than the company's other 0-6-0Ts and were designed for use in the yards on either side of the River Tyne. In NBR days they were known as class L. There were ten of them, the first was built in 1881 and the last was withdrawn by BR in 1960.
A committee designed the NER class 8 0-6-0T, which became LNER class J74. The first was built in 1885 and the last was withdrawn from LNER service in 1931 (though it continued for a few years in industrial service).
The LNER class J75 came from the Hull & Barnsley Railway. They were designed by Matthew Stirling as HBR class G3. The first was built in 1901 and the last was withdrawn from BR in 1949.
NER's 124 class became LNER class J76. Twelve of these locomotives designed by E Fletcher were built. The first was built at Darlington in 1881 and the last was withdrawn by the LNER in 1929 (but it saw further service in industry).
Wilson Worsdell rebuilt a number of 0-4-4Ts as 0-6-0Ts of NER class 290, LNER class J77. The first was produced at York in 1899 and the last was withdrawn by BR in 1961.
In 1888 the NER built two 0-6-0 crane tanks, with a small crane mounted above the cab. These were NER class H1, and they later became LNER class J78. They were built for service around Gateshead works and that is where they spent much of their working lives. Number 590 was the last to be withdrawn in 1937.
Two short wheelbase 0-6-0Ts were built in 1896 as NER class H2, LNER class J79. These were designed by Wilson Worsdell.
Matthew Stirling designed the HBR (Hull & Barnsley Railway) class G2 0-6-0T, which later became LNER class J80. Three of these were built by Robert Stephenson & Co in 1892. The last of them was withdrawn by the LNER in 1931.
Seven NER class 44 0-6-0 saddle tanks designed by E Fletcher were built between 1881 and 1883. They were a short wheelbase design and were rebuilt as side tank locomotives between 1898 and 1902. The last was withdrawn from LNER service in 1926.
