First published in 2003 and subsequently reprinted, Colonel Michael Cobb's two volume atlas of the railways of Great Britain proved to be one of the most remarkable successes in the history of railway publishing. Providing a comprehensive overview of the country's railways, the Atlas won plaudits from both readers and critics alike. Produced to a scale that allowed far more detail than was normal in railway atlases and incorporating a fascinating array of additional information, such as station opening and closing dates, the Atlas represented a veritable treasure trove of information for all railway enthusiasts
resulting in both the original and second impressions selling out quickly. However, it was always recognised that the price represented a barrier to those who were, perhaps, only interested in part of the country. To address that issue, a new series, of which this is the second volume, based upon the original cartography from Colonel Cobb's Atlas, is being launched.
Each volume in the 'Railways of Britain' series includes some 40 maps updated and revised from Colonel Cobb's originals.
The maps show the railway network in terms of those lines still open, those open for freight traffic only, lines which have been preserved and those closed completely. Alongside the railway lines, the book also includes an outline of the road network in simplified form to allow the inter-relationship between railways and roads to be clearly identified. In addition to the mapping, each volume also includes a detailed historical sketch outlining the development of the area's railway network, a representative selection of photographs as well as a detailed index and a gazetteer of stations with opening and, where appropriate, closure dates. As such, each volume in the series becomes a detailed reference book on the area featured.
This second volume in the series deals with the fascinating and very diverse railway network of Kent and Sussex. The lines found in these southern counties range from busy commuter routes into the capital to rural light railways and those serving dockyards and coalfields.
The success of Colonel Cobb's two-volume Atlas proved that there was considerable interest in a detailed mapping covering the railways of Great Britain. This new series goes further, providing the reader with a definitive guide to the railways of the area featured; each volume will be an essential reference source for all living in the regions covered and to all serious railway historians.
