First published in 2003 and subsequently reprinted, Colonel Michael Cobb's two volume atlas, The Railways of Great Britain won plaudits from both readers and critics alike as it provided a comprehensive overview of the country's railways.
However, it was always recognised that the price (£150.00) represented a barrier to those who were only interested in part of the country. To address this, a new series is being launched. This is the first volume, based upon the original cartography from Colonel Cobb's Atlas.
Each volume in the Railways of Britain series will include over 40 maps, updated and revised from Colonel Cobb's originals. Alongside the railway lines, the book also includes an outline of the road network, to allow the relationship between railways and roads to be clearly identified. In addition to the mapping, each volume also includes a historical sketch outlining the development of the area's railway network, a representative selection of photographs as well as a detailed index and a gazetteer of stations with opening and, where appropriate, closure dates. As such, each volume in the series becomes a detailed reference book on the area featured.
The first volume in the series covers East Anglia, predominantly Norfolk and Suffolk. Although this region was largely dominated by the Great Eastern Railway, there were also other companies such as the Midland & Great Northern Joint and the Mid-Suffolk Light railways that provided an essential link for the many communities they served. East Anglia was not only an area whose economy was dominated by agriculture and fisheries, it had an industrial base and during two World Wars played a vital role in Britain's defence. These activities all affected the railway development of the region.
The success of Colonel Cobb's two-volume Atlas proved that there is considerable interest in detailed mapping covering the railways of Great Britain. This new series goes further, providing the reader with a definitive guide to the railways of the area featured; each volume will be an essential reference source for all living in the region covered and to all serious railway historians.
