Subtitled: A Personal Reflection by Bernard Mills.

A colour album depicting every one of the iconic and ever popular "Western" class diesel-hydraulic locomotives at work. Part of the book's charm lies in the background scenes beyond the locomotives, including depictions of GWR stations, viaducts, semaphore signals and signalboxes.

The book was produced in 2008 by the Diesel Traction Group to mark the 50th anniversary of the ground-breaking introduction of diesel-hydraulic locomotives to the Western Region of British Railways. The photographs depict some of the locomotives in their original liveries, both green and red, and others are shown in BR blue.

Each member of the class is depicted in the book, one per page, starting with D1000 "Western Enterprise" and ending with D1073 "Western Bulwark". The photographs include D1017 up to D1020, the four less photographed "Western" class locomotives. This was because they were vacuum brake fitted and were withdrawn earlier than the air braked examples.

The book is a sheer delight for anyone who experienced the throaty sound of these uniquely designed Maybach engined locomotives, and for those who wish they had witnessed them.
