This album features part of the first main line to the Midlands from the capital. Opened by the London & Birmingham Railway (L&BR), it was amalgamated with other companies to form the London & North Western Railway (L&NWR).
During the grouping the line became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway then, after nationalisation, became the principal trunk route of the London Midland Region of British Railways.
The maps and illustrations cover more than 150 years and explain the fascinating development of the six-track national artery.
