The line provided boat trains for ocean liners, freight trains for mineral traffic, for many industries and for local merchandise, together with passenger trains for local residents and the Gravesend ferry users.
All these services are illustrated, as are the varied stations.
The company running the line was the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway (LTSR), which became part of the Midland Railway (MR) prior to the grouping - when the line became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMSR).
The Corringham Light Railway, which served an oil refinery, is also included in the book.
