This account of the origins and subsequent development of these popular 4-6-0s, is illustrated with a wide variety of photos ranging from the first engines through to numerous members of the class in both LMS and BR service.
The Jubilee class was designed by Sir William Stanier and formed part of the effort to overcome the crisis in LMS locomotive power which had resulted from unchanging adherence to the locomotive philosophy of the former Midland Railway. Stanier brought with him successful design features from GWR practice, including the taper boiler.
Not only were these successful locomotives which lasted until the last few years of BR steam, but they were popular with travellers and enthusiasts because of the names which they carried (featured in Appendix 1). Fortunately for us, examples of the class have survived into preservation.
Appendices include details of boiler and tender variations, LMS allocations, liveries, selected particulars from engine record cards, an account of firing a 5XP, drawings and detail photos.
