The convoluted history of this railway line was firmly rooted in the industrial revolution, having actually been built by a canal company. It is presented in a readable and comprehensive way. The line became part of the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), which in turn became part of the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMSR).
The book covers the line's role over the years, being a vital public transport facility in the area until decline set in and the Stafford to Wellington route closed in stages up to 1991. However, the future of the remaining stretch of the joint line between Wellington and Shrewsbury seems assured as it forms part of an important cross-country route.
Little trace remains of the once famous branch to Coalport, but it's history is covered.
