The LNER was well known for its express passenger services, but also carried a prodigious amount of freight traffic. Coal was the main item carried, especially in the North-East and between the collieries of the Midlands and coal merchants in the London area.
At the other extreme were byways which would occasionally need a van in order to move agricultural produce. In between these extremes there were a wide variety of traffics and a selection of locomotive types to haul the trains.
