The Southern electrified network had it origins in the pioneering work of the LSWR and LBSCR in the years prior to World War 1. From these origins, the network of electrified lines gradually expanded, particularly during the interwar years and from the late 1950s, as initially the suburban and then the longer-distance network was gradually converted. Today, with the exception of a limited number of DMU services, virtually the entire network of ex-SR lines is fully electrified and countless thousands rely daily on these services for their travel to and from work or for pleasure.

Recent times have witnessed a considerable revolution with the withdrawal, except on services to Lymington, of the final slam-door stock and this has undoubtedly helped increase the interest in Southern EMU services; even without this, however, interest in the history of Southern EMUs has always been strong.

The book will includes about 175 colour images with detailed caption copy recording the evolution of the Southern EMU from the pre-war stock that survived into the 1950s through to the most recent units to have been introduced into service.
