The West Croydon - Wimbledon route was the earliest railway in the district but was always a quiet railway byway (it was later to become part of the Croydon Tramkink system). The Peckham Rye - Sutton route became part of a main line to the coast and a busy suburban artery.
Both were worked by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway and have had a long and varied history, fully illustrated in this volume.
