This programme takes a cab ride with an express train along the main line of the former London & North Western Railway (LNWR), otherwise known as the Premier Line. Modernisation of this route was completed in the 1960s.
Experience the journey of the 08:50 departure from London's Euston station on Thursday 30th May 1985 as it speeds its way to Liverpool's Lime Street station, emerging from the deep cutting for an 11:33 arrival.
Just beyond the platform end of London's Euston station the formidable Camden Bank looms in front of the train No wonder trains required banking assistance here in the days of steam. Indeed, trains on Camden Bank were originally cable hauled as it was thought too steep in the early days for steam locomotive traction, the engines taking over their trains at Camden.
The ornate mouth of Primrose Hill tunnel is a piece of historic architecture mostly only seen by train drivers. Further on is Wembley Yard, a staging point for Channel Tunnel and other freight trains. Watford Junction station and Watford Tunnel mark the border between the urban scenery of the London area and the mostly rural scenery between there and Liverpool.
The route takes in Tring Cutting (a long earthwork famously dug by hand labour), Rugby, Nuneaton and Stafford before entering the world famous station at Crewe. The station layout at Crewe as portrayed in this DVD dated back many years and is historically significant as work to completely remodel it began only four days after this journey was filmed.
A live commentary on the journey is provided by the Inspector who travelled in the cab.
