Shrewsbury has been a rail centre from the early days of railways. It was on the main London Paddington to Liverpool (actually to Birkenhead, from where passengers crossed the Mersey) main line of the Great Western Railway (GWR). The secondary lines from Shrewsbury went to South Wales, to Crewe on the LNWR and along the Cambrian Railway (CamR) line to Aberystwyth. This journey is along the latter route.
Filmed on 11th May 1988 this programme consists of two separate rides in the cab of class 150 "Sprinter" units along the mostly single-track route.
The journey from Shrewsbury to Dovey Junction was recorded from the cab of unit 150129, and that from Dovey Junction to Aberystwyth from the cab of 150150.
The historical significance of this programme is that it shows the Cambrian route in the days when it was still controlled by semaphore signalling, much of it dating from the days of steam
Previously released in video format as part of the Railscene cab ride series.
