Branch Line Video's latest programme on the Southern Railways system west of Exeter. With nearly 5 miles at 1 in 40 up the bank to Mortehoe, then 3 miles at 1 in 36 down the bank to Ilfracombe, this one of the Southern's most spectacular main lines.
Highlights include an early journey over the line circa 1898 showing the original Barnstaple Quay station, rare footage of The Devon Belle from the early 1950s with views from the Pullman Observation Car.
Also included are scenes of Southern and Western Region trains pounding up the banks either side of Mortehoe Station as well as a drivers eye view of the line taken from a DMU in 1964. The video includes a brief history of the line from its earliest days to closure in 1970.
Together with Then & Now scenes, plus reminiscences of former local railwaymen bear witness to the challenging nature of the line. This programme pays tribute to one of the Southern's most spectacular lines in the West Country.
