The tank engine was first introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century as a means of avoiding running round and turning engines at either end of the journey.
The concept caught on and tank engines on passenger trains varied from the diminutive Great Western Railway 0-4-2 tanks on Branch line work to the impressive BR Standard class 4s, which were basically small express engines fitted with side tanks. See them both - with many types in between - in this programme.
