Most of this programme is of a brake van ride in 1965 along the route from Malton to Whitby. At the time this was an unremarkable everyday event, but nowadays it gives us a fascinating glimpse of fascinating world which has disappeared.
Pickup goods trains ceased to run many years ago, and even the humble brake van has long since ceased to be found on normal goods trains. However, it is still possible to enjoy part of the route covered by the brake van ride, as it has since become the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).
The programme ends with a ride in a DMU between Whitby and Scarborough.
