The 'Cornish Mails' in the last Summer of the Penzance - Bristol - Penzance TPO
Even in their last summer Britain's Travelling Post Office services were far from being an idiosyncratic quirk from the Victorian era, but the only way to really appreciate this was to spend all night on board - this is your chance to ride the Penzance TPO from dusk until dawn.
We begin at St Blazey Depot, home for the 'captive Penzance set', where we see both the locomotive, 'Rising Star', and the TPO stock itself prepared for the long night ahead. Thereafter, we follow the Penzance - Bristol - Penzance TPO throughout its duty; empty to Penzance then as 1C01, 19.35 Penzance to Bristol RMT and 1C02 return.
Numerous lineside shots and the often frenetic sorting activity in the train itself intercut with scenes in the class 67 cab (of the view forward and each driver).
Every station stop is included, along with connecting air, road links and rail services whilst visits to England's most westerly Post Office and Truro Mail Centre enable us to track a Special Delivery parcel heading 'up country', fully illustrating how this TPO was at the core of the Royal Mail's West Country operation and enabling us to appreciate the vital role played by TPOs in the delivery of priority mail. . .
