Farewell to the Class 58s
The Class 58 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives were historically important because they incorporated some radical new design features.
For instance, they were designed so that whole modules containing a faulty component could be quickly removed and replaced by a fully tested working module. This meant that the locomotive could be put back into traffic very quickly, whereas older types of locomotive had to remain out of service for long periods while fitters diagnosed and corrected faults.
One of the design criteria was that the locomotive could be repaired anywhere, not only where specialised workshops were available. This resulted in the locomotives having catwalks along the side with access doors to the compartments. It was hoped that this feature would help to bring in export orders from countries where repair facilities were minimal. However, this was not to be.
Each of the fifty members of the class are featured in this programme, which is composed of material dating from 1986 up to 2002. The locomotives are shown hauling freight trains, for which they were designed, plus express passenger trains and enthusiast's railtours.
All have now been withdrawn, after a service life of less than twenty years. This programme allows us to enjoy the experience of seeing them again.
