The English Electric 1Co-Co1 diesel-electric type 4 locomotives were introduced into BR service in 1958 (later they became known as class 40). Some of them were named after great liners from the glory days when international travel was by ship, and the airliner had yet to become dominant.
Power output was boosted by the use of an exhaust driven compressor, which resulted in them making a whistling noise (the same was true of the class 20s by the same manufacturer).
Withdrawal from BR service came in the 1980s and this programme faithfully captures these locomotives during their final decade, including showing them hauling a number of railtours.
