The class 47 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives have always had a dedicated following, possibly because of their elegant yet functional design. They were designed in a great hurry and introduced as the Brush Type 4s. It is a testament to the hard-pressed designers that the locomotives were an instant success on both passenger and freight services.
By the 1990s the continued existence of the class 47s was threatened by the existence of more modern locomotives and multiple units. The newer designs required less maintenance, and so were more economically viable. Fleet numbers of the class 47s declined rapidly as locomotives made their final journeys to scrapyards, and even Sheffield's Tinsley depot, closely associated with servicing this type, was closed and demolished.
This programme is the third volume in the series about this class. It includes scenes of many of the 'last' passenger duties, plus archive footage from the 1970s.
