The Woodhead route across the Pennines via Penistone was always a favourite among enthusiasts. It was an early railway electrification scheme and was an early victim of route rationalisation closures.
This programme was filmed mainly in 1964 when class 77 Co-Co locomotives carrying classical names were used on express trains between Manchester Piccadilly (London Road) and Sheffield (Victoria). Class 506 EMUs operated services to Hyde and Glossop and class 76 Bo-Bo electric locomotives hauled prodigious amounts of coal along the route from Wath. Locomotives are seen in both the early green livery and the later 'Corporate Blue' livery.
Worsborough incline is visited. The line up Worsborough Bank was electrified, but in pre-electrification days the LNER class U1 Beyer-Garratt 2-8-8-2 was used here as a banking engine. The steam engine had gone before this film was made, but the incline was still a formidable test for the crews of heavy coal trains.
A few diesels and scenes at the now closed Dinting Steam Centre are included.
