Archive footage from the 1970s, when the steam railway infrastructure was still in place, even though the use of steam locomotives had ceased a few years before. Examples of the infrastructure include semaphore signals, mechanical shunting signals and signal boxes from which the signalling was controlled.
The flagship locomotives of the time were the English Electric Deltic Co-Co diesel-electric machines. Other express services were operated by Brush type 4 Co-Co of class 47, and slower trains by Brush type 2 A1A-A1As of class 31. Suburban trains were made up of Cravens built multiple units.
