The North East of England was once covered with industrial railways, mostly carrying coal to vessels waiting on rivers. Some of the systems were very extensive, employing many privately owned steam locomotives and diesel locomotives. The film in this programme was taken by Jon Marsh in the 1960s, when significant amounts of industrial railway action could still be found in the area.
This programme features: -
- Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway (LHJR) system around Philadelphia
- Ashington Colliery
- Amble
- Derwentaugh
- Backworth
- Morrison Busty
- Blackburn Park Drift
- Team Valley
- Doxford's Shipyard at Sunderland (with its famous crane tank locos)
- Seaham Harbour
- British Railways steam locomotives (many ex-NER).
A fascinating record of a bygone age when steam locomotives operated in the North East and there was still significant coal mining activity in the area.
