This ever popular classic comedy of the silent film era is now available on DVD. Your ancestors are likely to have enjoyed this film at a local cinema, or in a tent erected specially to show the film, laughing at the humorous situations which develop. Buster Keaton's work is timeless and continues to bring joy to generations.
The main character is Johnny Gray, played by Buster Keaton, an engine driver for the local railroad company. During the American Civil War he attempts to join the Confederate Army, but he is turned down and returns to his normal life.
Events become dramatic when Johnny's steam locomotive (a typically American 4-4-0 named 'General') is stolen by soldiers of the Union Army and is taken by them along the tracks toward their own lines.
Johnny and his girlfriend Annabelle Lee take another locomotive and set off in hot pursuit. The chase is a sequence of typically funny Buster Keaton visual gags and his famous facial expressions.
Amazingly, this film is based upon events which actually took place. The steam locomotive 'General' really was stolen by Union Army troops during the American Civil War.
The film ends in true silent comedy style when Johnny becomes a hero in recognition of his bravery and wins his girl's affections.
