In the 1970s, the Republic of South Africa was a paradise for the steam enthusiast with large portions of the state rail network still entirely steam-operated.
Part 1 takes a look at 15F and 19D 4-8-2s on the Pietersburg-Tzaneen line in the Transvaal.and then to Germiston, Spring and Witbank. Also lines of the Orange Free State with their 15F and 23 Class.
Footage also includes Garratts in Natal and trips to industrial locations with their mixture of both ex-main line and industrial types.
The programme is taken from colour cine film and includes a full informative commentary.
