The Class 47, formerly known as the Brush Type 4, railway locomotive was hastily designed. Nevertheless it was very successful and became the mainstay of British Rail passenger and freight services until eclipsed by more powerful and more efficient locomotives.
Class 47s were allocated to all regions of British Rail, though the allocation of a few to the Southern Region was short lived. However, they visited the area daily from other regions and continued to haul passenger, parcels and freight trains over Southern Region metals for many years.
After a full and productive life the decline of the Class 47 locomotive fleet continued after the turn of the century. This DVD portrays them during their run-down period following the year 2000. It is overflowing with action shots of examples of these machines working across Britain.
