A feast of Woodhead route electric action filmed between the 1950s and the 1980s. The route from Manchester London Road (Piccadilly) to Sheffield Victoria and Wath via Penistone was operated by the unique class 76 Bo-Bos and class 77 Co-Cos.
Its not shown in this film, but the electric locomotives were associated with the Netherlands. The first class 76 locomotive operated there while waiting for the electrification scheme back home to be completed, and class 77s operated in the Netherlands after withdrawal by BR.
Comparison 'before' and 'after' shots highlight how much things have changed. But the majority of the programme consists of archive footage of this, one of the most ambitious electrification schemes of its time.
