At last the long awaited successor to the well received (and now out of print) KINGS CROSS. If St. Pancras was the Grand Dame of the north London termini, and Kings Cross the Sturdy Yeoman, Euston was Elder Statesman. It brooked no rival and maintained a Premier Line air of unruffled superiority and grandness airily if conveniently ignoring the increasingly warren-like quality of its accretionary and shambling development, and the ugly and rambling buildings which grew all about, dimming its Propylaeum glory and reducing it in public esteem until its defilement, the sweeping away of the Great Arch and its replacement by the brutalist monstrosity of today. Old Euston was perhaps the greatest lost glory of all the Great British Stations, and this book captures perfectly the unique (and uniquely steamy and smoky) atmosphere of a (literally) monumental terminus.
