**** Sorry this item is currently out of stock **** Sub-Titled: LMS & LNER Garratts

Beyer-Garratt articulated locomotives were built at Gorton in Manchester and could be found in many parts of the British empire. Back home the LNER bought one and used it as a banking locomotive on the former Great Central railway in Yorkshire. It was a surprise to many that the LNER did not buy more of them.

The LMS bought a small fleet of Beyer-Garrett locomotives for use on heavy coal trains between Toton (in the Nottingham area) and Brent (in the London area). The LMS had great hopes that these would be as successful as similar locomotives abroad. However, they insisted that their fleet should be fitted with Midland Railway design axleboxes. As a result the fleet always suffered from axleboxes overheating. Nevertheless, they survived for about a decade into the BR era.

An interesting study of these huge and surprisingly neglected locomotives. This account not only records the story of their development, but details subsequent modifications. Test reports are included together with photographs of every locomotive.
