Sub-Titled: Ipswich And Cambridge Districts
The great Eastern Railway made it sway forcefully through the years and long defied the inherent disadvantages of economy and geography under which it laboured. Part one of this work described three of the five Great Eastern Locomotive Districts as they were disposed in 1914, Stratford, Peterborough and Norwich, and the rambling districts of Ipswich and Cambridge, linked by cross-country and branch line workings now long extinct, are elaborated herein.
The commercial might of the great companies joining London with the north of England and Scotland, the North Eastern Railway and others, was the lost birthright of the GER. With great strength, vigour and individuality, it had overcome receivership and made good of the dismal traffic prospects to be found in East Anglia.
A relative prosperity on other companies supported a bureaucracy which in turn manifested itself as 'standardisation'. This was not the case on the Great Eastern, at least as far as engine sheds were concerned and a collection of buildings grew up notable for their individuality and a shared decrepitude, rarely other than idiosyncratic. An introduction and background to this was contained in Part One.
The fascinating and enduring range of buildings in the GER Running Department defied attempts at standardisation apart from a certain `contemporary likeness` dependent upon the building period, and a variety of styles and practice served in original form until the end of steam. Part Two concludes a descriptive account of the Great Eastern's engine sheds, from early origins through to final closure; as noted in Part 1, a number of appendices are included- allocations, workshop reports, notes relating to conditions of service, and others.
