The book covers the 25 years between 1923 and 1948 that the Southern Railway was in existence and is illustrated by an attractive selection of black and white photographs from many different sources. It looks at the locomotives inherited from the three amalgamating companies in 1923, and goes on to include SR designs by Maunsell and Bulleid.
The book looks into the age of diesels and the Southern Electric system.
Other subjects include rolling stock, mishaps, railway works, sheds, stations and signal boxes. The remainder of the book is devoted to a section by section look around the railway, finishing with the charming narrow gauge Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
This book will appeal to both historians and modellers.
